The Check Engine Light

An illuminated check engine light doesn't necessarily mean that your engine is on the cusp of disaster. Nevertheless, it's still smart to get to the shop for computerized diagnostics so that any emerging problems can be pinpointed and addressed before they get worse. Common check engine light triggers include issues with O2 sensors, MAF sensors, and catalytic converters.

Common Symptoms of Engine Trouble

Power loss could mean that significant engine trouble is brewing. However, if you have an older vehicle with high miles and it has slowly lost a little bit of power over the years, then you don't necessarily need to worry. But if your car abruptly loses a lot of power, then you could have a head gasket or piston issue—or another serious problem.

When strange sounds emerge from the engine, it's important to figure out their source. Knocking and tapping noises are definitely concerning and could indicate problems such as bad rod bearings, insufficient lubrication, and a lean air/fuel mix. If you hear grinding sounds, you could be dealing with a broken power steering pump or broken water pump. Squealing noises are often due to serpentine belt issues.

Another sign of trouble is that your vehicle is emitting discolored/excessive exhaust smoke. Blue-tinged smoke is a sign that oil is leaking. White smoke is symptomatic of an internal coolant leak, and could indicate a blown head gasket. Black smoke suggests that an excessive amount of fuel is being burned.
